Is Your Shampoo Harming Your Health?
The haircare industry loves a big promise, but what it rarely tells us is that many of the formulas marketed as solutions are quietly doing damage behind the scenes. We're sold product after product, kept in a loop of over-consumption, without ever addressing the real issue: the ingredients.
It's time we talk about what's really in conventional haircare — and why it matters more than we’ve been led to believe.
The Haircare Hamster Wheel
For years, we’ve been led to believe that a new product is the solution to our hair problems. Oily scalp? You need a detoxifying shampoo. Dry ends? Add a repairing conditioner. Still not perfect? Throw in a leave-in conditioner, a heat protector, maybe even a weekly treatment.
But what if the very products claiming to “fix” the problem are actually causing it?
Most conventional shampoos and conditioners are filled with synthetic ingredients designed to give quick, superficial results. Think ultra-smooth hair after one wash. But those results often come at a cost. Harsh detergents strip your scalp of natural oils. Artificial fragrances and preservatives throw off your skin’s balance.
And so the cycle begins: your scalp overproduces oil, your ends get drier, and you’re back in the grocery store aisle searching for the next miracle product.
It’s not your hair that’s the problem. It’s the ingredients.
Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals in Haircare
Here are some of the worst offenders to look out for:
✖️ Parabens
These are synthetic preservatives (like methylparaben and propylparaben) used to extend shelf life. But they’ve also been found to mimic estrogen in the body and have been detected in breast tissue. Long-term exposure is linked to hormone disruption and reproductive concerns.
✖️ Phthalates
Often hidden under the word fragrance, phthalates are used to make scent last longer. But they're also endocrine disruptors linked to infertility, thyroid issues, and developmental problems.
✖️ Sulfates (SLS and SLES)
These harsh detergents are what create the foamy lather in many shampoos. But they can strip your scalp’s natural oils, cause irritation, and disrupt your skin barrier, leading to dryness, flakiness, and more oil production (which keeps the cycle going).
✖️ Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
These include ingredients like DMDM hydantoin or quaternium-15, which slowly release formaldehyde over time. Yes — formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, sadly is still found in some conventional hair products.
✖️ Triclosan
Once used in antibacterial soaps, triclosan is still found in some hair products. It’s been linked to thyroid disruption, antibiotic resistance, and liver toxicity.
These ingredients don’t just rinse down the drain. They are absorbed through the skin, especially the scalp, which is highly sensitive. And when used daily, they slowly build up in the body, creating a cumulative toxic load that impacts our health in ways we might not even realise.
The Gut-Hormone-Hair Connection
What does shampoo have to do with your gut? A lot, actually.
Everything we put on our bodies has the potential to affect what’s happening on the inside. Our skin, including your scalp, is an entry point. And many of the same toxins that disrupt hormone balance can also impact gut health. Our gut and our hormones are intricately linked, working together to regulate everything from our mood and skin to our metabolism and menstrual cycle.
When we overload our system with endocrine-disrupting chemicals, we’re not just irritating our scalp, we’re throwing off our internal balance. And if you're already navigating hormone challenges, fertility struggles, thyroid issues or gut imbalances, these ingredients could be making things worse without you even realising.
We Know Clean Haircare Is Complicated
Haircare was one of the hardest categories for us to curate. Why? Because “clean” doesn’t always mean safe. Many brands use natural branding or buzzwords, but still sneak in synthetic preservatives or artificial fragrances. And on the flip side, some products that are truly clean just don’t perform well, leaving hair feeling heavy, dry, or unmanageable.
We tried so many brands that missed the mark. Some didn’t meet our standards. Others left our hair feeling much worse. So we persisted. We researched. We tested everything ourselves.
And now, after months of behind-the-scenes work, we’re finally proud to stock a haircare collection that meets our non-negotiables: zero hormone-disrupting ingredients, no synthetic preservatives, no artificial fragrance. Just clean, effective, gentle formulas that actually work.

Your Haircare Routine Shouldn’t Be Harming You
Here’s what we believe:
Your shampoo shouldn’t be something you have to question. You shouldn’t need to decode a label to know it’s safe. And you most definitely shouldn’t be compromising your health just to have beautiful hair.
If you’re tired of jumping from one product to the next, constantly trying to fix what never seems to stay fixed — maybe it’s not you. Maybe it’s the toxic haircare industry.
The answer isn’t adding more products, but going back to less. Fewer ingredients. Fewer bottles. More intention.
We’ll continue expanding our range with brands we trust, that are transparent, effective, and safe for your entire body.
